Clinical Mental Health Counseling (M.S.)

The Masters level Clinical Mental Health (CMH) Counseling program, which is approved by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), is designed to prepare diverse, knowledgeable and skilled counseling professionals to work in a variety of settings including:

  • Private practice
  • Substance abuse programs
  • Hospital-based treatment programs
  • Community-based correction programs
  • Veteran's Administration medical centers
  • Educational settings (high school and college/university)
  • Employee assistance programs
  • Community non-profit organizations

Our Masters of Science degree (M.S.) is designed so that upon completion of the program, students will have met Tennessee's Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) educational requirements as well as the State's Mental Health Service Provider (MHSP)educational requirements.

The mission of the CMH Counseling program faculty is to prepare counselors who will ethically promote the emotional well-being of:

  • Individuals (childhood through adulthood)
  • Families
  • Diverse client populations located in urban, rural and international settings.

Individuals admitted into the program learn in a dynamic, experiential environment which affords students opportunities to achieve academic, professional, and personal success.

The program requires completion of a minimum of sixty (60) graduate hours of academic coursework, and includes the successful completion of a practicum (3 graduate hours/150 clock hours) a clinical internship (9 graduate hours/600 clock hours) and successfully passing a written comprehensive examination. Clinical Mental Health Counseling Certificate

The Certificate in Clinical Mental Health Counseling is intended for individuals who are currently pursuing a Master's degree in School Counseling at the University of Memphis or are University of Memphis School Counseling graduates.  The certificate will allow students to complete Tennessee's Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) educational requirements as well as the State's Mental Health Service Provider (MHSP) educational requirements. The Clinical Mental Health certificate is only open to University of Memphis School Counseling graduates.
