Van Vleet Memorial Fellowship
Van Vleet Memorial Fellowships are made possible by the generosity of the Van Vleet Foundation. The Van Vleet Foundation was established in 1964 by the late McKay Van Vleet, Memphis civic leader and business executive. The gift to the University of Memphis was made by his wife Ms. Harriet Van Vleet.
Purpose:
To attract superior doctoral students in the sciences to the University of Memphis
Eligibility:

Students accepted to doctoral programs in Audiology and Speech Pathology, Nursing, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Public Health, Physics, Earth Sciences, Engineering, Computer Science, Psychology, and Applied Physiology and Neuromechanics
- Student’s highest degree must have a minimum cGPA of 3.25.
- Students must be nominated by the department to which they have been accepted.
- It was the wish of the Van Vleet’s to support local students so priority will be given to students who are from Memphis, TN and then to those residing in TN and then to all other students.
Selection Process:
In January the graduate school will solicit nominations from each of the departments listed above. The nomination form can be found here. Only one nomination per department will be accepted. After the deadline (typically in February), nominations and supporting documents are shared with the Van Vleet Fellowship selection committee. The Van Vleet Fellowship selection committee is comprised of a graduate faculty member from each of the programs identified above. The Van Vleet Fellowship Committee make awards during a schedule meeting where a quorum is present.
Award Amount:
- $20,000 stipend
- Tuition for courses required for the program
- University and course fees for courses required for the program
Award Period and Renewal conditions:
The award is renewable each year for a total of four years. Renewal is based on the following criteria:
- The student must maintain a 3.0 cumulative cGPA
- The student must be making good progress toward their degree. This includes meeting program milestones (passing comprehensive exams, prospectus development and defense, etc. as specified by the program).
- Recommendation of the department chair and student’s advisor.
