Spirituality as a Predictor of Guilt and Shame Among Lesbian and Gay Adults

ABSTRACT: Many lesbian and gay individuals experience shame and guilt in varying degrees, and this experience has the potential to deleteriously affect individual wellness. It is important for counselors to understand the relationships between shame, guilt, and wellness among individuals who are lesbian and gay to promote best practices across counseling settings. The American Counseling Association (ACA) stated that "when appropriate, counselors should advocate at individual, group, institutional, and societal levels to examine potential barriers and obstacles that inhibit access and/or growth and development of clients."
