LVRT capacity enhancement of DFIG based wind farms by controller based auxiliary devices

ABSTRACT: In order to enhance the low voltage ride through (LVRT) capability, controller based auxiliary devices, such as a bridge type fault current limiter (BFCL) and parallel resonance fault current limiter (PRFCL) are proposed for the doubly fed induction generators (DFIGs) based onshore wind farms, and also a particle swarm optimization (PSO) based DC-chopper is proposed for the DFIG based offshore wind farms. Matlab/Simulink based simulations performed on various test systems under fault conditions show that the control based BFCL and PRFCL, and PSO based DC-chopper are very effective devices in enhancing the LVRT capability of the DFIG based wind farms.
