Full
Available to tenured and tenure-track faculty,  and visiting professors.

May chair master's and doctoral  committees. 

May chair master's and doctoral committees in other programs at that program's discretion.

May serve on master's and doctoral committees

May vote on graduate issues.

May serve on UCGS.

Terminal degree

At least 6 peer-reviewed works in nationally recognized outlets in preceding 6 years (or equivalent).

Evidence of continued pattern of scholarly or creative activity of the quality expected for initial membership.

6 calendar years, or duration of their appointment for visiting  professors.

Associate
All full-time faculty and faculty with formal non-employment affiliation with a UofM academic department or program, with a research/scholarship agenda and/or creative activities, are automatically granted Graduate Faculty Status at the Associate Member level.

May chair master's committees.

May chair master's committees in other programs at that program's discretion.

May NOT chair doctoral committees, but may Co-chair with a full member

May serve on master's and doctoral committees.

May vote on graduate issues.

May serve on UCGS if they are full-time UofM faculty.

External 
Available to those with terminal degrees who are NOT employed at U of M as full-time faculty members nor have a formal non-employment affiliation with UofM, but who have special expertise that is of benefit to a particular graduate program.

May serve on master's and doctoral committees, but may not chair or co-chiar these committees 

May NOT serve on UCGS.

Terminal degree

A current CV together with an explanation from the department/unit regarding the qualifications of the individual and the anticipated role the individual will play

NOTES:

Persons who do not hold graduate faculty status but who have special expertise relevant to a particular student's topic may serve as an external member of a committee upon recommendation of department and approval of the College Director of Graduate Studies and the Dean of the Graduate School. Determination of whether such an external member is a voting member is made by the appropriate academic unit with the approval of the College Director of Graduate Studies. Only one external member is allowed on a committee.
