Jan 26, 2024 The Office of First-Generation Student Success at the University of Memphis recently received two prestigious national accolades for its initiatives creating a holistic environment for first-generation students to feel supported, empowered and included.

According to the UofM’s Fall 2023 student demographics dashboard, 32% of UofM undergraduates were first-generation students, meaning they were the first in their family to attend college. Many in this cohort face more challenges academically and financially than their continuing-generation peers.

"Receiving the Silver NASPA Excellence Awards is not just recognition of achievement — it's a testament to our unwavering commitment to empowering first-generation students,” said Director Jacki Rodriguez. “This honor aligns with the mission of the University of Memphis Office of First-Generation Student Success, reaffirming our dedication to fostering inclusive, supportive and transformative experiences for first-gen students pursuing a college degree.”

Rodriguez and First Scholars Program Manager Nikaila Morrison comprise the two-member office. They foster partnerships with other UofM divisions and external entities to carry out the wide array of services provided to hundreds of students annually.

FIRST TO ROAR

One of the silver awards the office received was for First to Roar, a collection of the programs it offers. When first-generation students get to campus, they are introduced to comprehensive services tailored to their unique journey including the Peer Mentor Program, First-Gen Week activities, academic coaching, counseling options and life skills workshops.

That is in addition to new programs such as the Opportunity Scholars DACA (deferred action for childhood arrivals), TPS (Temporary Protected Status) and support services for first-generation immigrant families. Office staff are also trained with the First Scholars Network, a national model for scaling holistic first-generation student success.

All these services help to close the achievement gap, ensuring first-gen students have the same opportunities as their peers on campus.

BUILDING A CAREER CLOSET

The second silver award was given for the Building a Career Closet initiative, a partnership among the First-Generation Office, Alumni Services and Career Services. The Career Closet came about because students were worried that they did not have the proper attire for career fairs and interviews.

In all, the office collected over 7,000 items of professional attire and over 500 neckties, which were handed out along with a tutorial showing students how to properly tie a tie. More Career Closets are planned in 2024 and include expanding to the UofM Lambuth Campus in Jackson.

“Being a first-generation student is not only about being the first in the family to attend college; it's about overcoming unique challenges and carving out a path to success. The programs and support services provided by the University of Memphis Office of First-Generation Student Success are more than just resources — they are lifelines,” said Rodriguez. “These initiatives not only offer practical assistance but also provide a sense of belonging and empowerment. They symbolize the University's commitment to ensuring that every first-generation student has the tools, guidance and encouragement needed to thrive academically and beyond. By offering these resources, the University is not just investing in individual students; it's investing in the future and breaking down barriers for generations to come.”
