Biography
Dr. Phan is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of the Department of Computer Science. His recent work in computer science education focuses on leveraging in-class coding exercises and generative AI to enable just-in-time and personalized interventions, enhance student performance prediction, and support active learning in programming courses. His research also examines strategies for improving feedback practices among teaching assistants and developing cloud-based platforms to facilitate in-class exercises in data science and machine learning courses. In bioinformatics, he develops computational approaches for bacterial identification in microbiomes and the analysis of sequencing and variant data. Across these domains, he applies machine learning and data mining techniques to improve both educational outcomes and biological data analysis.
