Requesting Alternative Formats
Instructions for Requesting Print Texts in an Alternative Format
For assistance requesting your course materials (e.g., textbooks, articles, syllabus, etc.) in an alternative format watch the Alternative Format Request tutorial video or the Custom Alternative Format Request video or follow the instructions below:
If you have been approved for an alternative format accommodation such as etext, please review the following information regarding how to obtain your textbooks or other course materials in an alternate format:
Register for classes as early as possible and obtain the list of textbooks needed for each course. If textbook information is not available at the bookstore, contact the professor to obtain the needed textbook information. Up to six weeks may be required to acquire alternative format textbooks. If you have problems or questions, please discuss them with your DRS Coordinator.
Submit your book requests in DRS Online using the instructions below:
- Log into DRS Online, scroll down to Accommodations on the left side, and click on the Alternative Formats tab.
- Please check and make sure that you are on the correct semester. If you are not, you can select the correct semester by clicking on the Previous Term/Next Term buttons.
- Below this there is a tab that labeled Alternative Formats Preference. Please click on this to select your preferred format such as PDF or Microsoft Word document. This lets DRS know what format you would prefer your textbooks to be in. Then click on Update Preference to save your selection.
- At the top right section of the screen, there is a tab that says Requests. Click on this button.
- Scroll down, and you can view a tab that says Request Alternative Formats. Below this is a list of the textbooks for each of your classes according to the University of Memphis Bookstore. Please be aware that some of these listings may be different versions of the same book. If you click on the Select button beside one of these listings, it will create the textbook request for that book.
- If you are requesting a textbook or other class materials that are not listed here already, you can scroll down, and you will be able to enter the Reading Material Information. You can first select which class the textbook is for. Then you can enter the textbook information such as the title, ISBN, publisher, author, and edition. Finally click the Submit Request button at the bottom of the page.
- At the top right section of the screen, there is a tab that says Upload Receipt. Click on this button.
- Scroll down to the Receipt Detail section. Click on Choose File and select the image of your proof of purchase such as a receipt. Due to copyright infringement laws, DRS students must upload a proof of purchase to receive their books in an alternate format. After uploading the proof purchase, select the courses with textbooks that are included in that proof of purchase.
- You have now submitted an alternate format request for one of your textbooks or other course materials. If you have additional textbooks or in-class materials that you would like to request, please repeat this process for the rest of your requests.
Provide proof of book ownership to DRS by uploading it to DRS Online using the instructions below. Books cannot be released without proof of ownership.

- Please check and make sure that you are on the correct semester. If you are not, you can select the correct semester by clicking on the Previous Term/Next Term buttons.

DRS will provide you with a link to download the alternative format.
If the textbook is not available from the publisher in an alternative format, DRS may need to cut the binding off your textbook, scan it, and create an etext version. DRS will have the textbook rebound in spiral before returning it to you.
If you have any questions or issues with submitting your alternate format requests, please contact your DRS coordinator or email drsbooks@memphis.edu
