In keeping with its status as an emerging R1 university, the University of Memphis is now the editorial home of the Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Education (JAEE), a Tier 1 journal with an international profile in the allied fields of arts management, entrepreneurship, and education. Spearheaded by Dr. Josef Hanson, an assistant professor in the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music and past president of the Society for Arts Entrepreneurship Education, the JAEE was formerly housed at North Carolina State University (NC State) and received a major overhaul and rebranding in its transition to Memphis. Hanson worked with librarians Dr. Joel Roberts and Dr. Kenneth Haggerty, both who will also serve on the JAEE editorial board, to forge the partnership with University Libraries that brought the project to life. "As far as we know," said Hanson, "the JAEE will be the first scholarly journal of international renown to be hosted digitally at the University of Memphis."
Hanson, who will serve as managing editor of the journal alongside Dr. Gary Beckman of NC State, teamed with Roberts and Haggerty on a successful Community of Research Scholars (CoRS) grant proposal that provided support for the project. Recently, the editorial team published a new issue featuring contributions from diverse leaders in six arts disciplines. The JAEE is open-access - free of paywalls and publishing fees - and can be viewed at www.journalaee.org. The journal's Twitter handle is @JournalAEE.
Hanson's arrival at the University of Memphis in 2019 coincided with several College of Communication and Fine Arts initiatives in the rapidly-emerging field of arts entrepreneurship, including the launch of a graduate certificate program (see details here). "Arts entrepreneurship represents something bigger than starting a business to monetize artwork" explained Hanson, who led the Society for Arts Entrepreneurship for five years and has published widely on the topic. "It's about transforming artistic ideas into enterprises that create purpose and value, broadly-defined."
Those interested in submitting an essay or research article for publication consideration should reach out to Hanson for more information at josef.hanson@memphis.edu. While the open call for the next JAEE issue ends Jan. 31, 2021, submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis throughout the year.
