June Awards

 

Dr. Richard Irwin, Executive Dean of UofM Global, Academic Innovation in the College of Professional & Liberal Studies, was awarded $675,904.60 from the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) for his project “University of Memphis, Byway Management Program.”

Dr. Susan Neely-Barnes, professor, chair and director of the School of Social Work, was awarded $627,164 from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for her project “Memphis Social Work Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (MSW-SDS), and ”$464,391 from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for her project “INTEGRATE (INterprofessional TEams GRounded in Apprenticeship, Telehealth, and Evidence).”

Dr. Eraina Schauss, associate professor in the Department of Counseling, Educational Psychology & Research, was awarded $350,000 from the University of Memphis Research Foundation (UMRF) with The Urban Child Institute (TUCI) for her project “Fostering Resilience and Well-being in the Pediatric Trauma Population: Counseling Interventions for an At-Risk Population.”

Dr. Susan Elswick, faculty director and principal investigator in the Interprofessional Community Health Clinic, was awarded $170,000 from the University of Memphis Research Foundation (UMRF) with The Urban Child Institute (TUCI) for her project “School Mental Health Access to Resources through Teletherapy (SMART) Research, Training, and Treatment Center.”

Dr. Lan Wang, department chair and Dunavant Professor in the Department of Computer Science, was awarded $90,000 from Peraton Labs Inc. with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) for her project “Mission-Integrated Network Control (MINC).”

Dr. Ali Fatemi, Ring Companies Endowed professor, department chair and director of Fatigue and Fracture Research Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was awarded $68,000 from the Steel Founders' Society of America with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) for his project “Application of Fracture Mechanics for Strength Prediction of Steel Castings.”

Dr. Kathryn Howell, associate professor in the Department of Psychology, was awarded $55,000 from the University of Memphis Research Foundation (UMRF) with The Urban Child Institute (TUCI) for her project “Examining Intervention Services for Pregnant Women Exposed to Intimate Partner Violence.”

Dr. Karen Weddle-West, Vice President of Student Academic Success, was awarded $50,000 from the Association of Public and Land Grant Universities (APLU) for her project “The Prep Academy and African American Male Academy:  Model Pathways to facilitate admission and degree completion for Adult Learns of Color.”

Dr. Eunseo Choi, associate professor in the Center for Earthquake Research and Information, was awarded $43,819 from the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) for his project “Viscoelastic numerical modeling of crustal deformation in the Korean Peninsula after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake.”

Dr. Farhad Jazaei, assistant professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, was awarded $25,752 from Brown and Caldwell for his project “Studying the Occurrence of Microplastics Pollution in Agricultural Farms.”

Dr. Xinhua Yu, associate professor in the Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Environmental Health, and PhD program coordinator for Epidemiology, was awarded $23,695 from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) for his project “Does Military Traumatic Brain Injury Increase the Risk for Developing Early Onset Dementia and Mild Cognitive Impairment?”

Dr. Abu Mohammed Naser Titu, assistant professor in the division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Environmental Health, was awarded $2,500 from The Campbell Foundation for his project “Safety and Outcomes of Total Shoulder Arthroplasty amongst Medicare Patients in a Single Ambulatory Surgery Center: a Matched Cohort Study.”
