Dasgupta Receives Lifetime Research Award

Presented with Arthur C. Graesser Lifetime Achievement in Research

On April 6, Dr. Dipankar Dasgupta, Hill Professor in Cybersecurity, director of the Center for Information Assurance and director of the FIT CAST Research Cluster, was honored with the 2022 Arthur C. Graesser Presidential Award for Lifetime Achievement in Research during the 2023 Research Awards celebration. Both Dr. Arthur “Art” Graesser, Emeritus Professor, Experimental (Cognitive) and co-founder of the Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS), and Dr. Bill Hardgrave, University of Memphis President, presented the award to Dasgupta.

“I am honored to receive such a prestigious award,” said Dr. Dasgupta.

Dasgupta is a tenured professor who has made significant contributions to the research enterprise and reputation of the University through an exemplary and sustained record of academic scholarship, research collaboration, mentoring and university citizenship. Dasgupta has been significantly involved in research, education and service activities.

Dasgupta continues to support the student and the community, where he serves on the editorial board of five proceedings/journals and has approximately three hundred research papers in book chapters, journals and international conference proceedings. He has held +400 plus international research talks in many countries as an expert in the scientific community. According to Google Scholar indexing, he has a scholar h-index of sixty-five with over 20,000 citations.

Some of his recent accomplishments include:

Selected as a prestigious National Academy of Inventors (NAI) Fellow for the Class of 2022 and will be inducted on June 2023 at NAI annual event in Washington DC.
Formed a team of faculty experts from 15 University Consortium and gave an invited talk on November 16, 2022, at the DoD University Consortium for Cybersecurity (UC2) Research Workshop hosted by the National Defense University at Fort McNair in Washington, DC.
Published seven papers in peer-reviewed journals and international conferences.
Involved in eight federally funded projects as the PI and Co-PIs
Received a patent for a multi-user Permission strategy to access sensitive information. US Patent #11,503,035,2022 on November 16, 2022.
Received award on the recognition of the University of Memphis as a National Center of Excellence in Cyber Defense Education
Organized as a Co-Chair of the IEEE Computational Intelligence in Cybersecurity (CICS) Symposium in Singapore from Dec. 4-7, 2022.
Gave a tutorial entitled “Machine Learning Applications, Adversarial Attacks, and Mitigation Strategies” on December 4, 2022, in IEEE SSCI 2022, Singapore.

But, most importantly, if you ask Dr. Dasgupta what his greatest accomplishment is, he says it is not about his actions. His inspiration transfers his passion for the subject matter to students. Along with his knowledge transfer, accessibility, career guidance, quality of life and feedback to his students, he inspires others and is dedicated to student success, which includes practicum experience. He has supervised more than one hundred graduate and undergraduate students, including fourteen doctoral, five post-doctoral and fifty master’s students. His advisees are in highly technical positions in the leading tech industry, including Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Apple, Discover card, Facebook and Adobe.
