Dr. Celia Anderson, professor in the Department of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership, was awarded $652,440 from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville (UTK) with the Tennessee Department of Education (TDoEd) for her project “University of Memphis College of Education Grow Your Own Program.”

Dr. Matthew Smeltzer, associate professor in the Division of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Environmental Health, was awarded $416,442 from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for his project “Tennessee Sickle Cell Disease Surveillance Program (Optional Component).”

Dr. Gary Bowlin, chair of excellence and professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, was awarded $414,779 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for his project “Downregulation of neutrophil extracellular traps by fibrous regeneration template design.”

Dr. Latrice Pichon, associate professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences, was awarded $349,996 from Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for her project “Ending the HIV and Stigma Syndemic: Re-framing Health Education Content for Southern Black Churches,” and $35,700 from the State of Tennessee with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) for her project “National HIV Behavioral Surveillance (NHBS) 2022.”

Dr. Brian Waldron, associate professor of Civil Engineering and director of Center for Applied Earth Science and Engineering (CAESER), was awarded $212,583 from Conch Technologies, Incorporated for his project “Master - MLGW GSR.”

Dr. Thomas Goebel, assistant professor in the Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI), was awarded $182,055 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his project “CAREER: From slow to fast, micro to macro, single events to cascades: A multi-scale study of seismic event triggering in lab and nature.”

Dr. Xiaolei Huang, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, was awarded $174,960 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his project “CRII: III: Metadata-guided Imbalance-Modeling for Robust Computational Healthcare.”

Dr. Ali Fatemi, Ring Companies Endowed Professor and Department Chair and director of Fatigue and Fracture Research Laboratory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, was awarded $163,000 from Hyundai Motor Company for his project “Research on welding virtual predictive technology to improve the robustness and reliability of steel based PBV.”

Dr. Shawn Brown, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, was awarded $114,647 from the University of Missouri with the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his project “Exploring Coupled Physical, Biological and Chemical Processes that Control Lead Fate and Transport through Plastic Plumbing Materials.”

Dr. Santosh Kumar, director of the NIH Center of Excellence for Mobile Sensor Data-to-Knowledge (MD2K) and Lillian and Morrie Moss Chair of Excellence Professor in Computer Science, was awarded $95,706 from the University of Utah (UU) with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for his project “Affective Science and Smoking Cessation: Real Time World Assessment.”

Dr. Stephanie Ivey, associate Dean for Research in the Herff College of Engineering and professor in the department of Civil Engineering, was awarded $75,886 from Shelby County Schools (SCS) for her project “MSCS STEM Ambassadors 2022-23.”

Dr. John Sabatini, professor in the Department of Institute for Intelligent Systems, was awarded $59,407 from the U.S. Department of Education (US DoEd) for his project “Developing and implementing a technology-based, reading comprehension instruction system for adult literacy students.”

Dr. Thouraya Al-Nasser, clinical assistant professor & director of Clinical Services in the Department of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership, was awarded $56,060 from the Paris Special School District for her project “Paris School District Teacher ABA Training.”

Dr. Sabyasachee Mishra, professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, was awarded $50,000 from the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA) for his project “Integrated Mobility Innovation (IMI)” and $40,000 from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville (UTK) with the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) for his project “Evaluating Transit Accessibility to Food, Education, Recreation, and Other Essential Services in Tennessee.”

Dr. Gary Stinchcomb, assistant professor in the Department of Earth Sciences, was awarded $37,060 from Murray State University with the U.S. Department of Energy (US DoE) for his project “Methane dynamics described through vegetation-soil interactions in bald cypress and other bottomland hardwood forests.”

Dr. Maxime Paquette, associate professor in the College of Health Sciences, was awarded $35,163.44 from New Balance for his project “New Balance Fresher Study.”

Dr. Radesh Palakurthi, IHG Endowed Chair of Excellence, professor and dean in the Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality & Resort Management, was awarded $30,000 from Hardeman County Schools with the University of Tennessee-Knoxville (UTK) for his project “Hardeman County School System Educational Partnership Agreement Boliver High School.”

Dr. Russell Deaton, interim dean in the Herff College of Engineering, Kanuri Professor of Engineering and associate dean of Academic Affairs and Administration, was awarded $30,000 from the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance for his project “State A/E Board Grant.”

Dr. Amy Curry, associate professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, was awarded $29,108 from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for her project “Investigations into the Etiology of Phantom Limb Sensations and Phantom Limb Pain.”

Dr. Carolyn Kaldon, research associate professor in the Center for Research in Educational Policy (CREP), was awarded $25,000 from the Women's Foundation for a Greater Memphis for her project “WFGM Vision 2025: Evaluation 2022-2023.”

Dr. Ryan Parish, associate professor in the Department of Earth Sciences, was awarded $22,544 from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his project “Characterizing Poverty Point lithic networks during the Archaic Period in the Lower Mississippi River Valley through analytical chert sourcing.”

Dr. Todd Zoblotsky, research professor in the Center for Research in Educational Policy (CREP), was awarded $18,599 from the Shelby County Office of Reentry with the U.S. Department of Justice (US DoJ) for his project “Project Inspiring New Koncepts (INK).”

Dr. Jose Lopez, associate professor in the Department of Economics, was awarded $16,950 from the Russell Sage Foundation for his project “A Jury of One's Peers: The Effects of the Civil Rights Act of 1991 on Jury Trials.”

Dr. Myounggyu Won, assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science, was awarded $14,993 from The University of South Florida Board of Trustees with the National Security Agency (NSA) for his project “USF 502 Project Subaward.”

Dr. Michael Hagge, professor and chair of the Department of Architecture, was awarded $12,214 from the Tennessee Department of Commerce and Insurance for his project “Board of Architectural and Engineering Examiners Grant for Department of Architecture.”
