Bridging Disciplines in Mathematical Sciences
UofM Mathematics is one of the leading research departments in the nation.
The University of Memphis's math department emerges as a national leader in cutting-edge research, consistently producing groundbreaking work that advances the field of mathematics while receiving high international recognition and citations. According to Research.com, the department is recognized as number fifty [top ranking in the State of TN] in the national math discipline ranking in 2023. This ranking is based on scholarly research output measured by the D-index, which encompasses citations and publications. Only scholars with a D-index above 30 are listed. The Math Department 50th ranking in Research.com2023 cites 4 Members {Bollobas, D-index = 85; 35,575 Citations, 549 Publications; Lasiecka, D-index = 67; 15,785 Citations, 435 Publications; Triggiani, D-index = 51; 9,994 Citations, 239 Publications; Anastassiou, D- index = 31; 5,040 Citations, 709 Publications]. They also rank [4,8,18, 36] respectively, in the ratio of 38 ranking scientists at the University of Memphis across different disciplines. Research.com is a leading educational platform that helps students find the best schools, academic opportunities, and career paths.
With a team of renowned faculty members and a consistently strong pool of graduate students, the department has solidified its reputation as one of the premier destinations for mathematical exploration and discovery. Mathematical specialties represented by the Department include Combinatorics & Graph Theory, Functional Analysis, Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems, and Applied Statistics. The scope is two-fold: advance the mathematics discipline per se and use modern advanced mathematics to provide theoretical solutions to critical problems arising in various engineering, medicine, and applied science areas. In the first case, several long-standing conjectures were either established by math members or else shown to be incorrect and next supplied with minimal extra assumptions to make them correct.
These results have attracted international acclaim. In the latter case, collaboration with scientists who propose physically valid mathematical models is most desirable. This allows for pushing the boundaries of what’s possible and making significant contributions recognized nationally and internationally. Illustrations include combining Graph Theory with Computer Science, Partial Differential Equations with real-life technological advances, and advanced statistical tools to bear on medical discoveries. These efforts contribute to highly significant research, both disciplinary and interdisciplinary, with numerous high-profile publications in top-tier journals. This is all reflected by the data provided on Research.com. Mathematics is the language of science. Working closely with colleagues in engineering, physics, and computer science, one can apply mathematical principles in cutting-edge 21st-century research, which leads to development with far-reaching consequences.
The Department of Mathematical Sciences’ commitment to excellence extends well beyond research. It also provides a vigorous educational program training the next generation of mathematical leaders, whether they choose to pursue careers in academia, industry, or beyond. The placement of our PhDs well reflects this. This national recognition is an honor for both the Math department and the University of Memphis.
