Renewable Energy Systems

Designing an educational experience in renewable energy implementation across solar energy PV installation, electric vehicle charging stations and infrastructure, and smart building technology.

Dr. Mohd Hasan Ali, an associate professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Herff College of Engineering, received a $947,476 grant from the EnViron Renewable Energy LLC Company to conduct a project titled “Development of Training Program on Renewable Energy Systems” for a period of 3 years beginning January 2024. In recent years, solar photovoltaic (PV) system, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and smart building technology have gained wider acceptance by the power community. However, there is a lack of proper educational program that covers all these trending and timely areas of study. To fill in this technological gap, this project aims to design an educational experience in renewable energy implementation across solar energy PV installation, electric vehicle charging stations and infrastructure, and smart building technology through the funding support from the EnViron Company.

The student body and/or participants to be recruited by the EnViron Company will consist of college and high school students, the unemployed and underemployed, veterans, women, and those from re-entry program. The educational program provided will be consistent with the requirements of the industry standard and the standards of national accrediting entities of the individual industry national certifying body.

Ali, the project lead, and his team will contribute to the development of syllabus and curriculum on the above-mentioned three areas and provide training to the participants. Ali has expertise in the field of renewable energy, electric vehicle charging system and station, smart grids, and cybersecurity. With his extensive experience in cybersecurity education and training, Ali will spearhead the development of the hands-on exercises for the project and provide expertise on practical aspects of course development including training the course trainers.
