Dr. James Whelan, research professor (Clinical Health) in the Department of Psychology, was awarded
$2,348,297 from the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services
for his project “Change the odds: a multi-platform approach to gambling treatment.”
Dr. Laura Casey, professor in the Department of Curriculum and Leadership, was awarded $1,765,400
from Tennessee Department of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, with the
U.S. Department of Education (US DoEd) for her projects “UofM Center-based Early Intervention
(CBEI) Services,” and “UofM Home and Community-based Early Intervention (HCBEI) Services.”
Dr. Ashish Joshi, dean and distinguished university professor in the School of Public Health, was
awarded $1,043,560 from Shelby County Health Department with the Centers for Disease
Control (CDC) for his project “Center for Public Health Informatics, Data, Equity,
Analytics, and Systems (PH-IDEAS).”
Dr. Susan Neely-Barnes, professor and director chair in the Department of Social Work, was awarded $636,438
from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) for her project “Memphis
Social Work Scholarships for Disadvantaged Students (MSW-SDS).”
Dr. Ali Fatemi, Ring Companies Endowed Professor and department chair in the Department of Mechanical
Engineering and director of Fatigue and Fracture Research Laboratory, was awarded
$230,164 from Steel Founders' Society of America with the U.S. Department of Defense
(DoD) for his project “Steel Performance Initiative: Steel Technology Advanced Research
(STAR).”
Dr. Thomas Sutter, professor and W. Harry Feinstone Chair of Excellence in Molecular Biology in the
Department of Biological Sciences, was awarded $227,304 from the University of Pennsylvania
with the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Dr. Santosh Kumar, director, NIH mDOT Center; director, MD2K Center of Excellence; and Lillian and
Morrie Moss Chair of Excellence Professor in the Department of Computer Science, was
awarded $113,267 from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for his project “mHealth
Center for Discovery, Optimization & Translation of Temporally Precise Interventions
(mDOT).”
Dr. Susan Elswick, faculty director and principal investigator in the Interprofessional Community Health
Clinic, was awarded $100,000 from the Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance
Abuse Services for her project “Public Behavioral Health Workforce Recruitment and
Outreach Initiative.”
Dr. Satish Kedia, associate dean, Administration & Faculty Affairs, interim director and professor
in the Division of Social and Behavioral Sciences, was awarded $80,000 from Mending
Hearts, Inc. with the Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)
for his project “Expanding integrated housing, substance abuse/co-occurring treatment,
and support services for homeless women in Tennessee by Mending Hearts.”
Dr. Chrisann Schiro-Geist, professor and director of the University of Memphis Institute on Disability, was
awarded $78,000 from the Tennessee Department of Human Services for her project “Interagency
Agreement: Pre-Employment Transition Services.”
Dr. Maxime Paquette, associate professor in the College of Health Sciences, was awarded $61,268.84
from New Balance for his project “Influence of footwear midsole characteristics on
exertion, fatigue, soreness, and muscle inflammation following intense running,” <NEW>
$15,659 from Mettis Trainer for his project “Validity and reliability assessments
of the Mettis Trainer insoles,” and $2,997.85 from the University of Massachusetts/Amherst
for his project “The Influence of Alignment Garment on Running Economy and Lower Limb
Mechanics.
Dr. Nathan DeYonker, assistant professor in the Department of Chemistry, was awarded $57,534 from the
University of Arizona with the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his project “Examining
Fundamental 3d Transition Metal Bonding: A Combined Spectroscopic and Theoretical
Approach.”
Dr. Okenwa Okoli, dean of the Herff College of Engineering was awarded, $636,438 from Tennessee State
University (TSU) with the National Science Foundation (NSF) for his project “Tennessee
Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation.”
Dr. Huigang Liang, professor, Ph.D. Coordinator, and FedEx Chair of Excellence in the Fogelman College
Department of Management Information Systems, was awarded $19,491 from The University
of Texas at Austin with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for his project “A
sensor-controlled digital game-based approach to improve self-care behaviors among
adults diagnosed with hypertension in a Native American community.”
Dr. Melissa Marshall, executive director of Keep Tennessee Beautiful, was awarded $5,250 from Keep America
Beautiful for her project “2024 Great American Cleanup Grant - Keep Tennessee Beautiful.”
Dr. James Adelman, assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, was awarded $2,700
from Tennessee Ornithological Society for his project “Does personality predict pathogen
spread via suppressed sickness behaviors in a wild songbird?”
