National Committee Appointments Select UofM Faculty, Camp

Dr. Janey Camp gains national recognition with key appointments; recognized for her research contributions and expertise.

Since joining the University of Memphis in December of 2023, Dr. Janey Camp, research professor and associate director of Adaptation and Resilience for the Center for Applied Earth Science and Engineering Research, has been recognized for her research contributions and expertise through four appointments to national-level committees or boards.

In April, Camp was appointed to the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) inaugural Lifelines Advisory Panel (LAP) for a term of two to three years. NIBS was established by the U.S. Congress in 1974 and focuses on “accelerating collaboration between public and private stakeholders, advancing transformative technologies, and finding consensus solutions to mutual problems of concern.” The LAP will serve in an advisory role to the NIBS Lifelines Infrastructure Hub by “highlighting the importance of lifeline infrastructure in community disaster resilience and recovery.” In this role, Camp will provide strategic guidance, subject matter expertise, assistance in building partnerships, and offer feedback and recommendations on NIBS Lifelines Infrastructure Hub projects and programs.

As of July 1, 2024, Camp began service to the United States national section board of the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure (PIANC) (Welcome Our Newest Commissioners | PIANC USA). PIANC is an international association focused on waterborne transportation operations and management.  Camp attended her first board meeting in Chicago in September of this year.  She serves alongside retired leaders from the U.S. Corps of Engineers and industry leaders. Prior to joining the U.S. Board, Camp and colleague, Dr. Sephanie Ivey, Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering in the Herff College of Engineering, were appointed to serve as co-chairs of the education and outreach committee for Smart Rivers 2025, which will take place in September of 2025 in Memphis (Home - Smart Rivers 2025). The conference committee is chaired by University of Memphis alumni, Sandra Knight.

Camp’s prior research and involvement in the National Academies Transportation Research Board’s Inland Waterways Committee has led to another national-level appointment in that sector. She has been appointed to the planning committee for the  National Academies “Innovative Science and Technologies to Improve Security and Safety in the Marine Transportation System (MTS)– Eighth Biennial Marine Transportation System Innovative Science and Technology Conference”. This appointment is focused on planning the conference that will take place in June 2025. The conference “will seek to identify research needs, barriers, and potential progress related to overall maritime security and safety strategies including cybersecurity, marine facility and waterway security, cargo carriage safety, security and resilience related to adopting new goods movement technologies, maritime safety data systems and associated lessons learned, mariner safety, and security collaboration required among all MTS-related stakeholders and sectors.” (National Academies, 2024) - Innovative Science and Technologies to Improve Security and Safety in the Marine Transportation System – Eighth Biennial Marine Transportation System Innovative Science and Technology Conference | National Academies

Finally, Camp has been invited and appointed as an author for a second iteration of the National Climate Assessment Southeast Chapter. Previously, Camp joined other experts to develop the Fifth National Climate Assessment southeast chapter (Fifth National Climate Assessment). The National Climate Assessment is the U.S. Government’s foremost report on climate change impacts, risks, and adaptation, bringing together hundreds of experts from government, academic, non-profit, and private sectors. Over the next two years, Camp and other authors will be utilizing the latest data and information to inform development of the report’s chapters.

When asked about the appointments and what they represent to Camp, she stated, “It is an honor and privilege to be engaged in these efforts at a national level and from past experience, I have received much more than I have contributed - in terms of both knowledge gained that informs my research work as well as the experience of working with truly amazing people.”
