English Proficiency Exam

Demonstrated English language proficiency is required of all international students.  English proficiency may be satisfied in three ways:

  1. Student is a citizen of a country in which English is a primary language spoken at home or English is the primary language of instruction for at least 4 years of the student’s secondary/high school education. See list of countries that are approved for the proficiency waiver >
  2. A minimum score or greater on any of the following English language tests:

    Exam Minimum Score
    TOEFL 61 on the internet-based test or 
    500 on the paper/pencil test
    IELTS 6
    PTE 50
  3. Improve your English proficiency and gain full admission to the University of Memphis by participating in the Intensive English for Internationals (IEI) program. Successful completion of IEI will increase students’ English language abilities, professional skills, and add to one’s personal growth.

*Notes of Reference:

    • Puerto Ricans are US Citizens but demonstrated English language proficiency is still required.
    • Indian students who are educated in Hindi medium institutions will be required to demonstrate English language proficiency.
