Preparing for Supervised Practice
You must complete all onboarding and documentation before beginning Supervised Practice Experience. Requirements vary by site and may include:
- Background checks
- Drug screening
- Immunization and health documentation
- CPR certification
- HIPAA and privacy training
- Site-specific orientation
- Professional liability requirements
- Additional site documentation
Faculty will send instructions and deadlines. Some sites have extra requirements, so submit requested materials promptly — late paperwork can delay your placement.
Supervised Practice Experience
Supervised practice begins in the summer and continues through all three semesters, totaling more than 1,000 hours.
See the Student Handbook for schedules, attendance and professional conduct expectations, required documentation, competency assessment, preceptor and student evaluations, make-up hours, and practice-site policies.
Your Applied Project
Every student completes an outcomes-based applied project, building skills in research, program evaluation, data analysis, professional writing, and presentation. You will develop your research skills in NUTR 7010 Research Methods and complete the project through HPRO 7950 Applied Project.
Program and Graduate School resources cover project expectations, timelines, faculty mentorship, required forms, presentation, and final submission.
Graduate School Milestones
Graduate School deadlines run alongside your program requirements. You are responsible for tracking:
- Course registration
- Degree candidacy
- Applied project requirements
- Application for graduation

Do not wait until your final semester. View Graduate School dates and deadlines.
Preparing for the RDN Exam
Your coursework and supervised practice are designed to prepare you for the Commission on Dietetic Registration credentialing examination. All students also participate in an RD Exam Prep Workshop, included in program fees.
As you approach completion, faculty will walk you through:
- Verification of program completion
- CDR eligibility
- Exam registration
- Exam preparation resources
- State licensure
- Continuing education and credential maintenance
