Why This Minor
Tourism is one of the largest employers in the world, and Memphis sits at the center of a destination economy built on music, food, sport, conventions and river heritage. Hotels, attractions, festivals, convention and visitors bureaus, parks and arenas all need people who understand how visitors make decisions and how destinations are planned, marketed and managed responsibly.
The minor pairs well with majors across the University — business, marketing, sport management, hospitality, communications, geography, anthropology, foreign languages, parks and recreation, and more. You build industry-specific knowledge alongside your major and graduate with a credential that signals you can work in a visitor-facing, destination-driven field.
Coursework spans the full picture of the industry: commercial recreation and travel, hospitality and leisure marketing, sustainability, culinary tourism, international and global hospitality, sport tourism, visitor management and cross-cultural perspectives.
Courses you're already taking may count. Several of the core and elective options are also required or elective courses in hospitality, sport and leisure management and related majors. Check with your academic advisor — overlapping coursework can reduce the number of additional hours you need to complete the minor.
