ABA Mediation Competition

Sponsored by the American Bar Association, this competition is held in November of each year. Attorneys Stephen Shields coach the team. For more information, please visit the competition website.

This competition focuses on Rule 31 style of mediation. Instead of oral argument, the practices and competition consist of mock mediations based on problems presented. Try-outs are in September and the competition is in February. Four students are selected and separated into two teams. Memphis Law was the host school in 2016.

Recent participants:

  • 2015-16

    • Rachael Bakowicz and Madison Patey (Team B)
    • Achievements:
      • Team B (Bakowicz/Patey): Regional Finalists (2016)

A student's perspective:

"Only 2% of cases go to trial, most are settled out of court. I know what I learned during this competition will help me after Law School in any field of law I choose to go into."—Rachael Bakowicz
