AMUM is an important component of the College of Communication and Fine Arts, offering exhibition space for the Department of Art's Master of Fine Arts Graduate Thesis Exhibitions, and Annual Juried Student Exhibition. The museum's educational programs strive to engage the entire University community, and the general population of Memphis and it's surrounding region. AMUM partners with the University at large, the Institute of Egyptian Art & Archaeology, local schools, and various other organizations to enrich the daily lives of it's visitors. The Museum's research and educational projects are manifold – Read on to learn some of the ways we engage visitors through educational exhibitions and progamming.
Thousands of students and interested individuals visit AMUM each year for guided tours of our exhibitions and permanent collections. Here, they learn of ways art connects us to our shared cultural heritages, and continues to shape them today.
AMUM is a key component of the University's interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate Program in Museum Studies, which provides students from diverse academic backgrounds with an avenue to enter museum professions, by equipping them with the practical and theoretical skills of high demand within the field.
AMUM actively engaged with The Paul Revere Williams Project, in collaboration with AIA Memphis and the University of Memphis Department of Architecture, which aims to bring WIlliams, and his prolific yet under-recognized career to public, professional, and scholarly audiences. Two major components of the project are overseen by AMUM: One is an exhibition overviewing his life and work, currently being developed for travel. Second, we help maintain the project's website; which acts as a publishing hub for findings uncovered in the research process, and provides various educational materials for public and K-12 classroom use.
Additionally, AMUM is searching for original works by the 19th century American artist Samuel Hester Crone. Currently we are building an online catalog of information and works currently known about the artist. We hope to bring a much deserved level of recognition to an artist who remains virtually unknown making this in-depth resource publically available.
