Course Description

The transportation profession is facing a significant decline in its workforce due to the increasing number of workers eligible for retirement. Studies indicate as much as 50% of the public-sector transportation workforce is now eligible for retirement, and a large portion of those eligible to retire will do so by 2013. In addition, the number of students pursuing degrees in the transportation engineering area (primarily through civil engineering) continues to decline, and the production of graduates is not keeping pace with the demand for skilled workers in this area. Most transportation engineering education research efforts focus on undergraduate curriculum, with specific emphasis on the required undergraduate transportation engineering courses (i.e. Transportation Planning and Traffic Engineering). Besides the limited number of courses offered at the undergraduate level, most of these courses are in the form of electives. Workforce studies repeatedly highlight the importance of greater depth of knowledge and skill required for new transportation professionals, including a greater awareness of and the ability to effectively deal with multi-modal, environmental, economic, management, planning, and technology issues. Thus, it is important to provide an attractive option in terms of a well-developed transportation engineering certificate to help professionals meet with the needs of the transportation field. In addition to a well-educated and trained transportation workforce there is a need for transportation professionals who understand and have skills in intermodal freight transportation. It is evident that the 21st century will see a new focus on intermodal freight transportation driven by changes in technology and operations. Transportation professionals with knowledge of freight transportation and planning will be a necessity for the public and private sector to help build and maintain a sustainable, resilient and efficient freight transportation system; the backbone of the US economy.

Who should Attend

The proposed three-day workshop is designed for professionals, academics and students who want to obtain a better understanding of freight transportation and be exposed to practical methods/strategies, relationships among the different stakeholders and modes, and basic decision-making models for design and operations planning. Upon completion of the workshop the attendees will have a good understanding of the freight industry, the current challenges that the public and private sectors face and some of the available tools to address them.

Instructor Background Information

Dr. John Betak is the Managing Member of Collaborative Solutions LLC; a Research Fellow at the Center for Advanced Infrastructure and Transportation at Rutgers University; and a Senior Research Fellow, Center for Risk Management and Insurance, The University of Texas at Austin. He is a senior consultant with 50 years diversified, international experience in management, consulting, administration and research in corporations, non-profits and major North American universities. John has been involved with transportation operations on a metropolitan, regional, super-regional, national and international level since 1964. He has been a transportation and land use planner in a regional planning organization, a consultant to regional planning organizations, a research investigator and research director addressing a wide variety of freight and passenger issues, a university professor dealing with transportation operations, management, economics and engineering, a senior manager in a freight rail transportation company, a consultant to freight railroad companies and an advisor to state DOTs and international railroad research networks. He has written on US national policy regarding freight transportation networks, models and the economic impacts of transportation investments. He is currently working on projects related to all of the above as a consultant and university affiliated researcher. He will present on the Fundamentals of Railroad Intermodal Transportation.

Mr. Daniel Murray has more than 25 years of experience in a broad range of transportation fields including trucking, intermodal freight planning, transportation technology applications and public transit. Additional areas of expertise include advanced technology applications in trucking, transportation security analyses, and freight economic studies. As Vice President of Research for the American Transportation Research Institute (ATRI), Mr. Murray is responsible for managing more than $3.5M in transportation research, testing and evaluation. Mr. Murray is the project manager for more than a dozen public-sector and ATRI-sponsored research initiatives, and was the lead designer for the FHWA Freight Performance Measures program and the US DOT-sponsored Real-Time Truck Parking Availability program. He is the recipient of the University of Minnesota's 2010 William K. Smith Distinguished Service Award, and the ITE 2016 Research Partnership of the Year award. Mr. Murray has published numerous articles on transportation technologies, freight operations and economics, and transportation safety. He is actively involved in a variety of public and private transportation- and research-oriented programs, presently sits on several Boards including the Freight Mobility Research Institute and the Minnesota Freight Advisory Committee. He formerly represented freight interests as a Board Member of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Metropolitan Planning Organization. Prior to his employment with ATRI, Mr. Murray spent three years working in economic development for a Chicago economic development consortium and four years developing transit programs, policy and funding with the Regional Transit Board in Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota. Dan received his BA from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, and his MS from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. He will present on the Fundamentals Road Freight Transportation

Mrs. Cynthia Matthews is an Engineering Manager at FedEx Express. Mrs. Matthews' expertise lies in the field of Air Cargo Transportation. Over the last 25 years, she has planned, organized, directed and controlled the planning and preliminary design functions that defined requirements for buildings and material handling systems around the world. Mrs. Matthews has developed specifications for design, construction, and commission new material handling systems. She has developed long range operational plans producing volume projections and manpower forecasts. Additionally, Mrs. Matthews has provided the engineering support and acted as liaison for capital projects for the Memphis Hub, the largest operation in FedEx's network. She holds degrees of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Tennessee State University and Master of Engineering Management from Christian Brothers University. She will present on the Fundamentals Air Cargo Transportation.

Dr. Mihalis M. Golias is an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering and Associate Director for Research with the Intermodal Freight Transportation Institute at the University of Memphis. Dr. Golias expertize lie in the field of intermodal freight transportation networks (FTNs). Over the last 16 year he has collaborated with national and international researchers, practitioners and public entities on a number of transportation projects. He has developed models that enhance our understanding of operations and management of FTNs, and promote policies and decision support tools that optimize performance, economic opportunities, and accountability in the multi-stakeholder and multi-modal environment in which they operate. The focus of his research has been to address this issue by applying game theory and market based mechanisms to capture the complexity of freight transport systems and develop mathematical-empirical relations that describe and explain the behavior of the different stakeholders. Dr. Golias holds a Ph.D. and M.Sc. in transportation from Rutgers University and a BS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from Aristotle University. He is the chair elect of the Ports and Channels Committee of TRB. He will present on the Fundamentals of Blue and Brown Water Transportation.

Dr. Sabyasachee Mishra is Associate Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Memphis. His expertise includes Asset Management, Resource Allocation, Transportation Economics and Finance, Traffic safety, Econometric Modeling, Demand Modeling, Transportation Planning and Policy. He is involved with a number of national and state Transportation projects from Federal Highway Administration, Tennessee DOT, Maryland State Highway Administration, Maryland DOT, and Michigan DOT. In Michigan he was a part of the team to develop state specific crash reduction factors, and developed a Guidebook. Currently he is working with identification, modeling, and visualization of primary and secondary crashes in Tennessee. In addition to traffic safety, he is part of the team that developed Maryland Statewide Transportation Model.
