Intensive English for Internationals (IEI)

About IEI
(Intensive English for Internationals)

The Intensive English for Internationals (IEI) program at the University of Memphis helps students from around the world strengthen their English, prepare for academic and professional success, and become confident members of a university community.

IEI is designed for students who want more than language classes. Our program combines intensive English instruction, academic preparation, cultural learning, and personalized support so students can build the communication skills they need for university study, career development, and everyday life in the United States.

The mission of IEI is to provide high-quality English language instruction and meaningful cultural learning experiences in a supportive, inclusive, and academically rigorous environment.

We help students develop English proficiency, critical thinking skills, intercultural understanding, and the confidence needed to succeed in higher education, professional settings, and global communities.

What We Do

IEI offers non-credit intensive English language study for university-bound students and other learners who want to improve their English for academic, professional, or personal goals.

Students develop skills in:

  • Academic reading and writing
  • Grammar and language accuracy
  • Listening and note-taking
  • Speaking and pronunciation
  • Vocabulary development
  • Classroom communication
  • Cross-cultural communication
  • Critical thinking and academic confidence

Classes are small, interactive, and student-centered. Students receive regular feedback from experienced instructors and are placed into the appropriate level based on their English proficiency.

A Pathway to Academic and Professional Success

Many IEI students are preparing for undergraduate or graduate study at the University of Memphis or another U.S. institution. Others study English to improve their professional communication, participate more fully in their communities, or prepare for future international opportunities.

IEI helps students build the language and learning strategies needed to:

  • Understand university lectures and academic texts
  • Write organized academic essays and reports
  • Participate in class discussions
  • Communicate clearly with professors, classmates, and colleagues
  • Navigate U.S. academic expectations
  • Build confidence in English-speaking environments

A Supportive International Community

Studying in another language and culture is a major transition. IEI provides a welcoming environment where students are supported academically, socially, and culturally.

Our students learn with classmates from many countries and backgrounds. Through classroom activities, campus engagement, field trips, and cultural experiences, students build friendships, explore Memphis, and become part of the University of Memphis community.

Program Structure

IEI offers five 8-week sessions during the academic year, with start dates in January, March, May, August, and October. New students take a placement test at the beginning of the session and are placed into the level that best matches their current English ability.

Courses focus on the major skills needed for academic and real-world communication, including reading, writing, grammar, listening, speaking, pronunciation, and vocabulary.

Full-time F-1 students must enroll full-time. Students who do not hold an F-1 visa may be eligible to study full-time or part-time, depending on their goals and availability.
