icon for awardsCommunity Engagement and Commitment Award

Criteria: Nominees through their work and engagement must have contributed to community well-being and health through education, volunteering, research, and/or consulting.
Award: Plaque and Certificate and $750
Eligibility: All tenured and non-tenured full-time UofM SPH faculty are eligible.
Nominations: Faculty can self-nominate or be nominated by other faculty or division directors. Faculty, if not self-nominated, will be informed of their nomination.
Submission: Application must include a 500 words narrative that describes the applicant’s work in the community and how it improved community health. At least one letter of support from the leadership of the community is required. Materials should be submitted at sphdean@memphis.edu.The Dean, in consultation with the Awards Committee, will select the recipient.

Criteria: Nominees must have conducted research that demonstrates teamwork, collaboration, innovation, and a significant impact on public health. Principal Investigator status is not necessary.
Award: Certificate and $750
Eligibility: All tenured and non-tenured full-time UofM SPH faculty are eligible.
Nominations: Faculty can self-nominate or be nominated by other faculty or division directors. Faculty, if not self-nominated, will be informed of their nomination.
Submission: Application must include a 500 words narrative that describes the research, how the researcher facilitated team building and how the research has or will have an impact on public health policy or practice. Materials should be submitted at sphdean@memphis.edu. The Dean, in consultation with the Awards Committee, will select the recipient.

Criteria: The teaching award will be for those who teach in the UofM SPH undergraduate, graduate, and/or doctoral programs. Evaluation will include student-teacher evaluations, peer observations, course content, and use of innovative teaching techniques.
Award: Certificate and $750
Eligibility: All tenured and non-tenured full-time UofM SPH faculty are eligible.
Nominations: Faculty can self-nominate or be nominated by other faculty or division directors. Faculty, if not self-nominated, will be informed of their nomination.
Submission: Each application should include a 500 words narrative about the teaching of the faculty member including innovative content and evidence of teaching effectiveness. At least one letter of support from students and/or faculty is required. Materials should be submitted at sphdean@memphis.edu. The Dean, in consultation with the Awards Committee, will select the recipient.

Criteria: The UofM SPH Staff Award is given to a staff member who has demonstrated a high level of initiative, responsiveness, resourcefulness, and decision-making, made significant improvement and impact in the school/unit, and have positively influenced others to build and cultivate a culture of collegiality, equity, and inclusion.
Award: Certificate and $500
Eligibility: Full time Staff of UofM SPH are eligible.
Nomination: Staff may self-nominate or be nominated by other staff or faculty. All awards will be based on work completed during the current academic year. Staff, if not self-nominated, will be informed of their nomination.
Submission: Each application should include a 250 words narrative of the nominee’s work and at least one letter of support. Materials should be submitted at sphdean@memphis.edu. The Dean, in consultation with the Awards Committee, will select the recipient.

Criteria: One graduating doctoral student from each PhD program will be recognized for outstanding dissertation research.
Award: Certificate and $500 per recipient
Eligibility: All doctoral graduates from the current academic year (summer, fall and spring).
Nomination: One recommendation by each Division Director based on criteria they establish. Each nomination should include no more than 200 words narrative of the nominee’s achievements. Students will be informed of their nomination.
Submission: Each application should include one letter of support. Materials should be submitted at sphdean@memphis.edu. The Dean, in consultation with the Awards Committee, will select the recipient.

There are three separate categories for the Dean's Merit Awards: Research, Service, and Commitment. One recipient will be selected within each category for a total of 3 Student Merit Awards.

Criteria: For all awards, nominees demonstrated superior scholastic abilities.

  • The Research Award is for graduates and have excelled in research through coursework, practicum, thesis, or in their employment.
  • The Community Service Award is for a student who has made outstanding community impacts by engaging with community and/or professional organizations.
  • The Commitment Award is for graduates who spearheaded action to advance public health issues and/or overcame personal or professional hardships to attain a public health degree.

Award: Certificate and $500 per recipient
Eligibility: All graduates from the current academic year (summer, fall and spring).
Nomination: Division and Program Directors in consultation with faculty are asked to nominate recipients for each category of award. Each nomination should include no more than 200 words narrative of the nominee’s achievements. Students will be informed of their nomination.
