About:

The University of Memphis SEG Student Chapter is a registered student organization in the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) since 2012. The chapter is hosted by the Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI). It serves as a platform between you and the geoscience profession, so you can develop skills, acquire knowledge, and learn about industry internships and job opportunities. The student chapter currently has more than 20 members with diverse backgrounds, including students from the Center for Earthquake Research and Information (CERI), Department of Civil Engineering (CE), and Department of Earth Sciences (DES).

The student chapter is not just for geophysicists! Engineers, geologists, physicists, mathematicians, and others also benefit from participation. Membership in the Geophysical Society is available to anyone who is a full-time graduate or undergraduate student and in good standing at the University of Memphis.

List of Annual Activities:

  • CERI colloquia (weekly seminars by external speakers)
  • Tools of the Trade talks (sharing/teaching new techniques, software, or languages)
  • Welcome Field Trip (A Day trip to welcome new CERI students in August)
  • New officer election for the chapter (usually in September)
  • SEG chapter general meeting with CERI students (planning for the upcoming year)
  • SEG/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium (September)
  • SEG/ExxonMobil Student Education Program (September)
  • Canoeing on the Ghost River and BBQ (during/around the Fall break)
  • Pumpkin Carving (Halloween)
  • Chili Cookoff (November)
  • Bad science movie night (after the mid-term exam of each semester)
  • Earth Day (Likely to be an annual event co-organized with DES in April)
  • Outdoor games after Fish Fry (May)
  • Ping-Pong tournament (June)
  • International food festival (July)
