English Language Conditional Admission

For students who do not meet departmental or graduate school minimum language proficiency requirements conditional admission may be granted.

This means that you will begin your studies full-time in the Intensive English for Internationals (IEI) program on an I-20 provided by IEI. You must successfully complete the Advanced Level in the IEI program with a recommendation for graduate study in order to move from conditional to full admission to your program. After achieving advanced level, IEI will make a recommendation for full admission to the graduate school. The graduate school will then issue you a new admission letter indicating your full admission (unconditional) to your academic program and your I-20 will be transferred to the University of Memphis. You will begin your graduate academic program during the next available semester.

Please note that in order to pursue this program you will need to be admitted to the IEI program and to the Graduate School and to your specific academic program. You can apply simultaneously by following the steps below.

To apply for English Conditional Admission into graduate school, you should:

  • Complete an online application for Graduate Admissions in your chosen program
  • Select “Yes” to the question of whether you will be pursuing IEI courses.
  • Fill out and submit the IEI application that opens.
  • Continue the rest of your graduate school application and submit.
  • Inform the graduate program that you have applied for English Conditional Admission to the University of Memphis. Graduate program contacts can be found here.
  • Once you have been conditionally admitted, you will receive information about how to enroll in the IEI courses.

Students applying for conditional IEI admission do not need to show proof of language proficiency.
