The School of Public Health will host our annual Career and Internship Fair on Friday, November 1, 2024! This exclusive event provides School of Public Health students with valuable access to jobs, internships, and volunteer opportunities from a diverse array of corporate, government, and nonprofit organizations in Memphis and across Tennessee.
This year, we are thrilled to welcome 26 major healthcare organizations eager to connect with students and recruit top talent right here on the UofM Campus. It is a fantastic opportunity for community partners to highlight their vital work and for students to explore career pathways in public health.
Who should attend?
Open to all students currently enrolled at the School of Public Health including:
- Undergraduate students with a declared major/minor in public health
- Graduate and doctoral students (MPH, MHA, MS, PhD)
- Students in certificate programs

- Internships: Community Engagement Interns (part-time and unpaid but students are eligible to receive a scholarship up to $1,000).
- Responsibilities: Make presentations, host events, develop marketing campaigns, participate in community outreach events, recruit volunteers to serve as blood drive coordinators, coordinate communications with volunteer blood drive coordinators, and innovate new ways to rebuild the volunteer blood donor base.
- Skills required: Excellent Oral and Communications Skills, Public Speaking Skills, Able to Work Autonomously, Organizational and Marketing Skills, and Community Engagement Skills.

- Internship: 2 Public Health internships open every semester.
- Job: Currently hiring teachers for our classrooms. Part-time aftercare position open (M-F from 3:30-5:30).
- Volunteer opportunities: The biggest area for volunteers is in the classroom. This is a wonderful opportunity if someone is exploring a career in early childhood education or interested in working with children.

- Part Time Internship in Business Analytics and Strategic Planning -This intern position will work at the corporate office for Baptist in the Strategic Analytics department. The position will involve hands-on work in a rich learning environment. Experiences will involve financial, clinical, public health, and market data analysis and management using requisite data sets, research, and analytical tools to support the department and Baptist senior management in the areas of financial and clinical analytics and strategic planning. - Paid Summer Internships - Every summer Youth Villages places more than 70 interns throughout their residential programs and group homes in Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee. It is a 10-week, full-time, paid position working alongside direct care, clinical and leadership staff. - Bilingual Medical Reception Internship that aims to provide valuable hands-on experience in a healthcare setting. This internship is designed for individuals who are fluent in both English and Spanish, enabling effective communication with a diverse patient population while developing essential administrative skills. Key Responsibilities: Patient Interaction: Greet and check in patients, ensuring a welcoming and efficient front desk experience for both English-speaking and bilingual patients.
- Appointment Management: Assist in scheduling and confirming patient appointments, while effectively communicating with patients in both languages regarding cancellations and rescheduling. Patient Record Maintenance: Help maintain accurate and organized patient records, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA regulations. Communication: Respond to patient inquiries via phone and email in both languages, providing information about services and assisting with any questions or concerns.
- Survey Management: Monitor and manage patient surveys related to their experience, ensuring timely follow-up for feedback in both languages.
- Inventory Support: Assist in monitoring office supplies and notifying the team when inventory needs replenishing. Program Overview: Thank you for expressing interest in the Community Health Support Internship. We are in the early stages of developing this program aimed at enhancing client access to essential health supplies and support services. Key Responsibilities:
- Client Survey Management: Interns will monitor and manage client surveys filled out to access health supplies, ensuring accurate data collection. Follow-Up Communications: After a client completes a survey, interns will follow up within 7 days to answer any questions about using the supplies, which include condoms, Narcan, fentanyl test strips, and testing kits. Test Result Documentation: For clients who use testing kits, interns will record the results and facilitate connections with appropriate healthcare professionals.
- Narcan Usage Monitoring: If Narcan is used, interns will conduct a brief follow-up survey and connect clients with recovery specialists to provide additional support. Inventory Management: Interns will oversee the inventory system, tracking supplies and notifying the team about which machines require refilling and the specific items needed.
- Volunteer opportunities:
- Food Pantry Friend: Assist in providing nutritious monthly food bags filled with fresh and locally sourced items. Delivery options are available for clients in need.
- Promotional Friend: Help raise awareness and support for Friends For All by assembling distribution bags with health education materials. These will be provided at outreach events and through our partner organizations.
- Feast For Friends: Join us in hosting our monthly gathering where clients enjoy an evening of entertainment and dining. Volunteers will assist in preparing and serving meals in a delightful sit-down format.

Tips to help you succeed at the Career Fair
- Research the Organizations
Before attending, research the participating companies to understand their job openings, values, and culture. This will help you have meaningful conversations. - Bring Print Copies of Your Resume
Set up a resume review meeting with Jamecia Richardson, Coordinator for Experiential Learning and Career services (jamecia.richardson@memphis.edu). - Dress Professionally
Business formal or professional attire is a must. - Practice Your Elevator Pitch
Prepare a 30-60 second pitch about your skills, interests, and what you're looking for in a career. Be concise and confident. - Ask Insightful Questions
Engage recruiters with thoughtful questions about the company’s culture, job roles, growth opportunities, or the industry’s future. It shows genuine interest. - Be Respectful of Recruiter’s Time
Be respectful of other students waiting in line. Keep your conversations concise, and don’t take up too much time. - Follow-Up After the Event
Collect business cards and send a polite follow-up email to recruiters thanking them for their time. Mention something specific you discussed. - Stay Open-Minded
Try to engage with all organizations, even if they do not have open positions right now. Sometimes a good conversation can open unexpected doors.
