Standalone Testing

*Assessments and testing are currently on hold*

Body Composition

This assessment utilizes Dual Energy Absorptiometry (DXA), which is the gold standard in body composition measurement.  Analysis is non-invasive and provides measurements of bone density, muscle mass and fat mass across your entire body, creating both overall and area specific information. Bone density screening (in particular the hip, lumbar spine, and forearm) measures bone health, and measures osteoporosis and fracture risk.

Your will receive basic information, such as your total fat percentage and fat to muscle ratio, as well as advanced information such as right to left comparisons and locations specific information. This is extremely useful in guiding both nutritional changes and fitness training as target areas are clearly identified.

Resting Metabolic Rate

Measurement of you resting metabolic rate can be useful when planning a diet plan to determine your daily energy (calorie) requirements.

This test involves lying quietly on a table while breathing into a mask which is interfaced with metabolic gas analysis equipment. Based on the amount of oxygen consumed during quiet rest, technicians can determine the approximate resting caloric cost. That is, the amount of calories used at rest, from which you can create an understanding of nutritional needs. In conjunction with an assessment of your activity profile, this test provides sound baseline data pertaining to your caloric needs.

*Note: For best results, this test is performed first thing in the morning following an overnight fast.

Duration: 45 minutes
Cost: $75

Maximal Graded Exercise Test

A graded exercise test records your bodies response to physical activity to measure your fitness level and athletic capacity. Depending on your preference, this test can be performed on a cycle ergometer or treadmill, during which you will exercise at increasing more difficult workloads until you reach exhaustion (typically 8-12 minutes). Your fitness is measured by analyzing the air expired by your lungs, your heart is monitored with an ECG and blood pressure data is collected before and after the test. Analysis will detail your overall cardiorespiratory output and lactate threshold to guide your training zones. This test is sometimes referred to as a ‘stress test’ as we are measuring your bodies response to the ‘stress’ of exercise.

Running Economy Analysis

This laboratory test is designed for runners who wish to understand the efficiency of their gait to guide training zones and race pacing and is a strong predictor of running performance.

Running economy tests utilize gas analysis systems to measure the amount of oxygen used at specific running paces. Since this test is performed at submaximal efforts, it allows runners to assess their current fitness without performing a maximal effort test during a training period. During this test, you will run on a treadmill at a minimum of 3 different paces while the amount of oxygen that you consume is measured for five minutes.

Following the analysis, expert lab staff will discuss these results with you to attempt to provide you with a full understanding of their meaning and how to move forward with your training.

Duration: 60 minutes
Cost: $100

Optimal Cadence Analysis

This laboratory session for runners aims to determine which running cadence (i.e., steps per minute) produces the lowest amount of oxygen consumption. Less oxygen consumption indicates better metabolic economy to allow you to run at a certain pace for a longer period of time.

During this test, you will run on a treadmill at your selected pace while the amount of oxygen that you consume is measured. You cadence will then be manipulated by either increasing or reducing your number of steps per minute to determine which cadence yields the lowest amount of oxygen consumption.

Following the analysis, expert lab staff will discuss these results with you to attempt to provide you with a full understanding of their meaning and how to move forward with your training.

Duration: 60 minutes
