Orchestral Studies
The University of Memphis Symphony Orchestra (USO), sponsored by the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music, offers credits to both music majors and non-majors. Orchestra rehearsals are held on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 1:30 pm to 3:15 pm.
The USO includes approximately 80 undergraduate and graduate students. It performs at least two symphonic concerts each semester on the UofM campus, presented either in the recently renovated Harris Concert Hall, or in the University's newest performance venue – the Michael D. Rose Theater. The USO's repertoire includes compositions written for full, large orchestra as well as for smaller chamber orchestra, opera, oratorio, and concerto performances.
In addition to symphonic concerts, orchestra members perform in University Opera Division productions and have the opportunity to play with many musical organizations in Memphis and the Mid-South region. Many USO members joined the orchestral concert tour to perform in China and European countries.
Positions in the USO are filled by audition at the beginning of each semester. A limited number of scholarships are available.
