Joseph (Kip) Handwerker

PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics

My journey at the School of Public Health has been transformative, marked by profound growth, impactful achievements, and tailored to support full-time professionals like myself.

As a full-time employee at UTHSC, assisting in research pertaining to cancer and obesity in underserved populations, finding a program able to accommodate my schedule was crucial. The School of Public Health not only embraced my commitment to work but also seamlessly integrated its curriculum, allowing me to excel academically while balancing a demanding professional life.

The school’s continued commitment to students by fostering personal and professional growth is evident in its diverse curriculum. I was able to continue growing in knowledge in my current research area, while expanding my range of expertise to a variety of other fields. This exposure paved the way for several publications and the opportunity to present my findings at local and international conferences.

What sets this school apart is its inclusive approach, recognizing the diversity of paths students take, driven by faculty devoted to seeing students succeed. The program's inspirational elements resonate with various professional aspirations, offering a wide array of employment options through its programs.

In essence, my time here has been transformative, equipping me with knowledge and skills crucial for addressing complex health challenges. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the School of Public Health's legacy and be part of a community driving positive change in global public health.
