Literacy Leadership and Coaching Certificate

The Department of Instruction and Curriculum Leadership is proud to offer the online Certificate in Literacy Leadership and Coaching. The courses for the certificate are part of our nationally recognized online Master of Science in Instruction & Curriculum Leadership with a Literacy concentration program. The certificate offers an in-depth theoretical and pedagogical understanding of literacy practices, assessment, and policies. By working closely with dedicated faculty, you may earn a certificate that will enhance your ability to influence the profession of literacy and ultimately positively affect the lives of children. This program is offered fully online.

The program prepares graduates for positions as:

  • Literacy Coaches
  • Lead Teachers
  • Reading Specialists
  • Curriculum Coordinators

Our College of Education is accredited by NCATE (National Counsel of Accreditation in Teacher Education) and aligned with the International Literacy Association standards. The faculty from the online Masters in ICL with a Literacy focus program have the desire and expertise to work with students with diverse experiences and specialties.

The Literacy Leadership and Coaching Certificate program is flexible and convenient for classroom teachers or other full-time professionals who have multiple responsibilities, yet are motivated to advance their education.

Students who are seeking to be reading specialists may complete the certificate program along with their MS by taking five additional courses, having three years of classroom experience, and passing the ‘Reading Specialist’ Praxis Exam.

Program Admissions

To be admitted, students must have at least a Bachelor of Science and apply to the Graduate School as a Master's Degree seeking applicant. Under 'Planned Course of Study' select 'Literacy, Leadership, Coaching CERT'.

Program Requirements

A total of 5 courses are required plus 3 years teaching experience to receive a Certificate in Literacy Leadership and Coaching.

Students interested in receiving a Certificate in Literacy Leadership and Coaching must have 3 years teaching experience. Students may take courses prior to meeting the three years teaching requirement; however, they will not receive the Literacy Leadership & Coaching Certificate until meeting the state's requirement of three years teaching experience. 

LITL 7540 Literacy Instruction in the Elementary School
LITL 7541 Literacy Assessment and Intervention
LITL 7545 Teaching Literacy in the Subject Areas
LITL 7560 Literacy Leader and Coach
LITL 7000 Literacy and the English Language Learner 

These courses also apply 15 of the 30 hours toward our online Masters of Science degree in Instruction and Curriculum Leadership with a concentration in Literacy.
