Program Requirements
The French program at the University of Memphis provides a structured pathway from foundational language learning to advanced proficiency and specialized study. Students begin with introductory courses (FREN 1010 and 1020), where they develop core skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, followed by intermediate courses (FREN 2010 and 2020), which expand their ability to communicate about everyday life, academic topics, and cultural contexts. After completing these core requirements, students progress to upper-division coursework tailored to their academic interests and career goals, including courses in conversation and composition, translation, literature, civilization, and Francophone studies. The program emphasizes both linguistic proficiency and cultural competence, preparing students for opportunities in fields such as education, international business, translation, and global engagement. Students pursuing teaching or other specialized pathways are encouraged to consult with faculty advisors to align coursework with their professional goals. The French program offers flexible options for both minors and majors, allowing students to build advanced skills while engaging deeply with French and Francophone cultures.
