Late and Retroactive Withdrawals for Graduate Students

Late withdrawals and retroactive withdrawals are requests to drop a course or courses after the final date to drop classes has passed. These may be granted in cases of serious and unforseen circumstances that make it impossible for the student to successfully complete courses that semester and are reviewed on a case-by-case basis.Visit the late and retroactive withdrawals guidelines > page for more information.

Late Withdrawal Process

Late withdrawal is used when requesting to withdraw from the current semester (after the final date to drop classes has passed), or the semester immediately previous, summer not included.
Examples:

  • You are attending Fall 2022 and are requesting to withdraw from Spring 2022.
  • You are attending Fall 2022 and need to drop currently enrolled courses.
  • You are attending Spring 2023 and and are requesting to withdraw from Fall 2022.

To start the late withdrawal process, complete the Schedule Adjustment form >. Email the completed form to the Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Steve Zanskas at szanskas@memphis.edu. Please include an explanation why you are requesting a withdrawal, along with documentation supporting your request. He will review your request and, if approved, sign the Schedule Adjustment form and return it to you. Please allow 3 business days before sending a follow-up email.

Once you receive the signed form, you will submit a Course Withdrawal/Late Drops ticket. Go to http://www.memphis.edu/tigerhelp and select Registrar’s Office Help. When you get to the next page, from the list on the right-hand side select Course Withdrawal/Late Drops. Complete the form. There is a field that asks you to upload the approval from the College, which is where you will upload the approved form.

Retroactive Withdrawal Process

Retroactive withdrawals occur more than one major term (fall or spring) after the term for which the withdrawal is requested and must be submitted directly to the Registrar's Office. Please see the Retroactive Withdrawal Process section on the Late and Retroactive Withdrawal page for the instructions and required paperwork.

If you have any questions about this process, please contact the Registrar's Office.
