The graduate certificate program provides training to students interested in teaching African American literature. The 15 credit-hour program provides students with the background necessary to develop African American literature programs for elementary or secondary classrooms.

The MA in Literature seeks to provide students with the interpretive skills necessary to understand their own and other cultures through the study of literary texts and contexts. Literature students can take both traditional historical surveys and a variety of courses flexibly organized around author, genre, movement, theoretical approach, and special topic or theme.

The PhD in Literary and Cultural Studies emphasizes the importance of discourse in structuring human experience. The program assumes a broadened definition of “texts” that places literature in its historical and cultural contexts and in conversation with critical theory and interdisciplinary methodologies.
