Rooted in the power of music, the Music Therapy degree* is immersive and transformative for aspiring bachelor-level students. The music therapy degree culminates in Music Therapist - Board Certified  (MT-BC) licensure - a classified allied healthcare profession with many employment opportunities. 

Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions by a credentialed professional to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship. The music therapy program equips students with clinical skills based on medical and psychology knowledge and therapeutic approaches necessary to achieve outcomes in various healthcare and educational settings.

Through a comprehensive curriculum, students will explore the profound connections between music, psychology, and wellness. They will explore the science behind music's impact on the brain, emotions and overall well-being while developing practical techniques to apply this knowledge in real-world therapeutic settings.

Our program utilizes Memphis' world-class healthcare systems to provide students with diverse clinical settings to participate in supervised clinical placements. The degree culminates in a six-month clinical internship leading to a nationally recognized certification. Our program enables students to directly apply their skills in various healthcare settings, such as hospitals, rehabilitation centers, schools, and community organizations.

Graduates are eligible to take the Certification Board for Music Therapists, leading to the credential Music Therapist Board Certified (MT-BC). This credential is accepted in all states and territories of the United States.

What degree do we offer?

The Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy program prepares individuals for an entry-level position as a music therapist. A music therapist utilizes the art of music therapy as a profession, wherein the process of engaging in and creating music, whether actively or receptively, serves as a tool for clients to reach their unique therapeutic objectives.

Program graduates are ready to enter a graduate program in Music Therapy or be employed in general and psychiatric hospitals, community mental health agencies, rehabilitation centers, daycare facilities, nursing homes, schools and private practice.

Outcomes: 

    Music Therapy students will demonstrate functional music skills for clinical practice
    Music Therapy students will apply basic knowledge of the causes, symptoms of, and basic terminology used in medical, mental health and educational settings to the implementation of therapeutic interventions
    Music Therapy students will demonstrate effective treatment planning, including assessment of various diagnoses, setting goals and objectives, designing therapeutic music experiences, accurate data collection of behavior, and ability to articulate client progress through verbal and written means.
    Music Therapy students will define a variety of philosophies, approaches, and/or theories in music therapy
